The Adventures Of A Quirky Spaceman ...

Phew, I'm finally back from my exploration of the galaxy. You guys would probably have noticed that I've been missing for a while. In fact the last time I posted here was exactly one whole week ago and by my superior spaceman standards, that's really bad! Well, I'll leave my alter ego Nick of Anything Goes to explain the reasons for that. He's good at telling insignificant stories. Me on the other hand have better things to post ... LOL!

It has been a frantic week for me and I'm glad that it's finally over, well, I'm not that happy that the weekend is almost over too though. But it was an enjoyable weekend so no complains there. Yesterday Mrs. Spiff and me went out looking for a new microwave oven and we found a reasonably good buy and decided to get it. She was happy with it (at least I hope so) and me, well, I was like figuring out how the heck to get it to work with all those sleek one touch buttons presumably saying that I could microwave everything but the kitchen sink. Man, these things get more complicated all the time. Mrs. Spiff managed to figure it out fast enough though. She puts a spaceman like me to utter shame ... hehehe ...

Today was basically almost a full day out for me and the family. My nephew had his first holy communion in church this morning and it was a big thing over here. The mass alone lasted at least one and a half hours! It's become such a big thing that it's so commercialized nowadays, what isn't, ya? I found out from my cousin that they had to raise RM8,000 worth of funds for the event. RM8,000 for celebrating your first holy communion? Crazy isn't it? There were a total of 70 kids doing it and everyone made such a big fuss about it. There were official videographers, official photographers and whatnots. It was like some kind of grand Hollywood event.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against any of this, in fact I'm all for it but somewhere along the line, the real meaning of the event has gone slightly off track. I remember back when I was making my first holy communion, I didn't have to pay anything at all. I woke up in the morning, jumped on my bicycle, went to church, received my first holy communion and headed home after the service! As easy and simple as that. I guess things and traditions change with the times, ya? Now I'm dreading how much I'm going to have to spend when my kid does his holy communion next year!

Anyway, after the service, me and the family went shopping for some kitchen shelfs cos we felt like redecorating the kitchen. We went to our favourite hardware store in this mall near our place cos they have those DIY shelfs, which was what we were looking for cos we really like to fix the stuff ourselves. Besides I haven't used my Black and Decker drill in ages and I was just itching to drill something on the walls ... hehehe ... We did have some slight trouble drilling it to one of the walls in our kitchen cos the damn drill just wouldn't penetrate the wall (yes, I did use the right drill bit!) It felt like there was this layer of solid steel behind the wall. In the end we managed to get it installed on a different section of the wall, not our first choice for it, but it will do. And it does look good though :D

Then a little later in the evening, we went over to my cousins place cos she was having a thanksgiving dinner for my nephews holy communion thingy (yes, she took this very seriously). The whole clan was there and boy the kids were running riot. The dinner was pretty good, typical Eurasian food was on hand. The cooking was done by my cousin and there was quite a number of dishes. I had a blast eating most of it, even went for seconds. And boy am I stuffed like a turkey now ... hehehe ...

and finally, after dinner, we headed home and I just had to get online and post something before I head to bed. My wife's already in bed sound asleep and I'm going to be joining her in a bit. The boys are still awake though cos I can hear them whispering in their rooms. I guess they'll fall asleep eventually cos they're pretty bushed from all that playing just now. Before I sign off, I'd like to wish you all a great week ahead.

How true that everything has become commercialized to the point where the original meaning gets lost. My heart always goes out to the parents who can't afford all this foo-foo. As I single Mom I certainly couldn't have. It's a rather scary trend in our society - only what can be bought with money seems to have any value. But I'm glad you got a good meal out of the whole affair at least! :-)

Josie, sad isn't it? It happens in almost every aspect of life nowadays, maybe I should just pack up my rocket ship and head out to space or something ... LOL! Oh yeah, I stuffed myself silly I had trouble sleeping last night!

I remember when I made my first holy communion (sort of) it was a shindig way back then, I can only imagine what it is now!

BTW, I didn't know that spacemen used drills!

MP, it's like some big Hollywood event nowadays. There were photo shoots, certificate presentations, etc, etc, etc ... I'm surprise the press didn't turn up ... hehehe ...

Shhhhhh, I'm an old fashioned spaceman. If word got out that I use drill, my reps ruined, that's for sure ... LOL!
